Lenovo Thinkpad CPU suddenly overheating frequently

Hey guys, I run Windows 7 on a Lenovo Thinkpad edge e540, CPU is an AMD A6-5350M APU, 2.9 GHz, with Radeon HD graphics card. Lately my CPU has been maxing out while watching videos and running multiple tasks. It also becomes very warm and everything is noticeably glitchy. This has happened over a variety of networks and browsers so I'm assuming the issue is with hardware. The computer is about 2 years old and has never been cleaned or opened aside from installing an additional 4gb RAM, which is useless if the CPU can't keep up. This is especially annoying because I use virtual machines frequently which tend to max the CPU pretty quickly, and haven't in the past.

From the research I've done, I'm reasonably concluding that the issue is with my hardware or OS and not specific to any specific application. It looks like the most likely culprits are dirty internals or something with my graphics card, but I wanted to get some input before getting too deep into anything, or buying new parts. Thanks for the help guys, it's truly appreciated.

Hey pandman. The chances are that the issue is hardware not software related. I would suggest opening the laptop (carefully) and give it a clean with compressed air (low pressure) but try not to touch the components to avoid ESD (static). If the PC is fairly clean or once it is clean, with the laptop open, lay it down so that the base is vertical and the screen horizontal. Then carefully power on the laptop and check that the fans are spinning. Once you have done this, turn it off again and re-fit the bottom cover(s) of the laptop.

If you could tell me the CPU temperatures before and after the clean, it'd help me diagnose the issue. You can use CoreTemp to see the temperature of each CPU core: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Thank you for the response, I'm at work but will open it up tonite when I get home. You mentioned to check the fan movement after cleaning, would these be completely still if the CPU is dirty? Or is this just to make sure I didn't break anything and the fans still move as they should?

Hi. When you clean it, hold the fans still with a finger to avoid damaging the bearings inside (don't let them spin whilst blowing air into them). It's to check that all fans are functioning as a failed fan could be the cause of your issue.
