Hello, peeps.

I got interested in building a budget gaming PC. After a few weeks' research, and PCPartPicker, this is what I pulled together. I have no need for super-great graphics and no interest in overclocking.

I have a list below, but here's a link if you'd prefer that: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/cnngcf

  • Intel Core i5-4460 3.2 GHz Quad-Core processor
Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3 Micro ATX LGA1150 motherboard
    G.Skill Ripjaws X Series (2x 4GB) DDR3-1600 memory
Western Digital Caviar Blue 250 GB 3.5" 7200RPM hard drive
Club 3D Radeon R9 280 royalking video card
EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX power supply
Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer optical drive
Rosewill REDBONE U3 ATX Mid Tower case

Processor: Not the best, but good, am I right?
Motherboard: Recommended chipset, and MicroATXs are cheaper. No room for expansion, but I can live with that.
RAM: Why not? It looks pretty good, and is a little cheaper than some RAM out there.
HDD: I'm going to use this computer for school too, so I'll need storage space.
GPU: Seems good enough for my purposes.
PSU: Modular, Gold certified, not super costly--what more could I want?
Optical:There are some hard-copies of games in my house, so....
Case: I like the look of it and it comes with three fans.

I'm hoping to seize parts in sales and maybe finding old, unloved PCs and looting an optical drive and fans from it. This may never happen. I know I'll need a fan-header-splitter thing, and that'll add a few more dollars to thus cost. And then there's peripherals... life's expensive. And yes, I was trying for a black and red colour scheme.

I was looking at this monitor: http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Gaming_Accessories/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=320-9775

So, any advice?

Solution
Well. Everything else looks good. But 250GB of HDD probably would not be enough if you plan to play modern games. The space will get filled up pretty soon.

I would say at least 500 GB of HDD. But it would also be a good idea to add an SSD to install windows in and the regularly used programs. This will help with faster load times for windows and programs will also be faster in opening. But if you have limited budget, just go for the 500GB HDD.

Changed for a cheaper HDD, with 1tb or storage. Better case, but if you like the other one go for it. Different Mobo, just cheaper. 280X instead of 280

Yeah, sorry, I meant for one TB of HDD, but I wasn't really paying attention to what I put down. I was busy worrying about other stuff.
Thanks for pointing that out.
