Hello, I tried to read through the forum but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I have over 3000 DVDs that I am in the process of boxing up and moving to the garage. Before they get there, I'm ripping them to image files on my hard drive.

Is there is a ready-made solution to rip something like 5-10 discs at once? If not, what would be the best way to balance price and speed?

I'm thinking just a big tower with suitable CPU/RAM and 'x' optical drives installed. How many hard drives should be installed to maximize speed? 1 for every optical drive? 1 for every other optical drive? They don't have to be huge drives as I could consolidate to a large external drive after every 100 discs or so.

Finally, I suppose I'd have to figure out how to run 'x' instances of decrypting/ripping software too.

Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Hmmm ... Interesting.

If you anticipate issues with running concurrent copies of the software, then investigate a Virtual machine solution. You can probably attach cheap(ish) external DVD players via USB. Invest in a back-end NAS with a large disk array. I've not done the back-of-envelope calculations, but you will need a LOT of storage.

I'd steer you towards a mid-range Xeon E3-1231 V3 as processor.

Even at 5 DVDs concurrently, planning around 40 minutes/DVD and minimal manual intervention, that's about a moth's worth of non-stop work...

Well, the basic computer and NAS would remain, I'd imagine. the 4 excess DVD readers aren't that huge a deal. A virtual machine environment isn't that expensive last I looked. Some are even free (MS at some level of OS offers a free VM, IIRC?

Of course, the OP will have to run Linux on the VMs to avoid paying another $100/VM in license fees. :)

Karsten75 thanks for the staring point. I was thinking of running some sort of VM system. I know it's a lot of work, but I have the time. I'm already doing it, just very very slowly. I sort if imagine integrating this into daily/weekly/chores. Set up some discs, do some laundry, etc.

jsmithepa yeah it would pretty much be a one time deal. Parts to either be sold or reused in another project later on.
