I recently built a lot budget gaming computer for around $500. Everything is fine except that sometimes the system wont boot, or post. I take the cover off and start with the easiest part, the memory. I remove one or both sticks and replace one, and usually the system will boot afterwards. Since I only have to mess with the memory, I'm thinking my settings are wrong, the ram is bad or my dimm slots are screwed up. After I get it to boot with one stick, I usually shut down and add the second and it will usually boot with both.

This is strange and I have no way to test the ram or mobo. Is there something in the BIOS that I need to configure or something? Ive gone as far as I can by myself, HELP! :bounce:

When I bought the ram I noticed that the mobo said it supported 2133(o.c.) and I thought that meant overclocked or something so I bought the 1866. Not sure if that matters,

And a 2GB nivida 750 Ti ftw

Thank you very much for the suggestions terry. I set the DOHC? profile to the correct setting, 1867mhz 9-11-9-28. I think thats the one, but either way I know its on the correct setting now, I just dont have the info with me. I've been very busy because my classes are ending next week and I am swamped with work. I will check the rest of the suggestions but I am still having the same issue even after changing the settings in BIOS.

Just wanted to post an update and thank you.

Another common mistake with RAM is installing the sticks in mismatched slots. They are color coded. Your manual will show the correct installation.

I may be able to help if you can describe the problem more specifically. For example, does it seem like the on switch isn't working? Are there any error codes? Have you looked at the Windows event viewer?

Another part I would recommend is a case speaker. They are inexpensive, and provide beep codes which can help diagnose your system 's problem.

Tey are available at electronics stores as well.

I posted a response the other day and apparently it didn't post. I have gone through the checklists provided, I have them in the correct blue slots, and I have a case speaker installed. The XMP profile is now set properly and I still have the same issue. It happens everytime I try to turn the machine on.

I just tried to power it up after over 24 hours of being off and I had to hold the power button and shut it back down, remove one of the memory sticks, and then turn it back on. The system booted fine and I then shut it off and added the second stick, turned it back on, and it booted and is working just fine.

I went to my ASUS manual to see if I could use the two black slots without any performance decrease in case the issue is bad DIMM slots. I was browsing the qualified vendors list for memory and I think I may have found the issue. I am going to post a picture of the GSKILL memory that is compatible with my mobo and see if you can help me. I cant tell for sure if mine is compatible. I just assumed that all 1866mhz would work.

Thank you again for all the help Terry.

This has all the info about memory from the ASUS manual. I'll post the link to newegg for the memory I purchased.

Please let me know if these are compatible, as I think this might be the issue.

So here are the compatible memory options. The major problem is that almost everyone that I've searched for is either no longer in stock or has been discontinued. What the heck am I supposed to do?

If i'm going to order new memory, I'd like to get the 2133 overclocked this time. As you can see, I only have 6 options and I'm having one heck of a time even finding them.

Am I right to assume that it's the wrong memory since mine isnt on the supported list?

Thanks again!! I feel close to an answer!

This is the G.Skill compatibility list for the memory you specified. The list doesn't specify your exact version of the motherboard. If it did list all of the released versions of motherboard, I'm sure the list would be much longer. But it does list
the MSA97 plus a couple variations of the motherboard as compatible. So, I would say that the memory is compatible, but it isn't definitively identified as compatible.
(under the top listing under Asus motherboards).

Another thing I would check is the virtual memory. Go to Performance info & tools in the control panel. Click on Adjust visual effects , then go to the Advanced menu item. Click on Change Virtual memory. On the page that comes up it will list the amount of virtual memory allocated. It will also list the amount recommended. If they are much different, select Custom and manually set the Virtual memory to the recommended amount. I would do this for each drive. That will give you ample resources system.

I checked my paging file and it was set to 1240 mb and 4600 mb or so was recommended. I changed the initial size to 5000 and max to 10000. The beeps are as follows.

One short beep - VGA detected, quick boot set to disabled, no keyboard detected
One long beep and two short beeps - no memory detected
One long and three short - no VGA detected
One long and four short - hardware failure

Everytime I get the machine to boot I get one short beep. I have the keyboard plugged in so it means one of the other two.

Should I try to order memory that is listed in the manual and see if that fixes the issue? I only have another week or two to get a refund on the memory I have. Thanks again terry!

Ok, so I'll change my paging file to 25k/50k. I'm going to order new memory today that is specified in my manual. I will report back in a week and update you. I appreciate all the help terry. Thank you very much!
