Hello, my be quiet dark rock pro 3 on my 4670k reached 67 degrees while running aida 64 for just a few minutes. is this too high? i used the pea method of thermal paste with arctic cooling mx 4 and everything is at stock speed, please help

Solution
So long as your maximum temps are around 70c or below under normal use it should be fine. Idle temps aren't quite as important, but ambient temperatures can have a large impact. I just turned on an air conditioner and my idle temps have already dropped a couple of degrees. It will likely be quite a bit cooler when ambient temps drop. In winter my idle temps are closer to 19-22c.

Bit hot to be honest, but the max temp is 70. I would make sure your ventilation is good (clean your fans), and if that does not help re-apply your thermal paste.

I literally built it yesterday (day of this post) so my fans are perfectly clean, and im sure that my paste was applied correctly with a pea sized blob.

How did you mount the cooler? Did you try holding it up to the motherboard with the motherboard already inside the case? If so it could have mounted slightly crooked. The easiest way for that cooler is to mount it to the motherboard outside of the case by setting the cooler face down on a solid surface (like a desk or counter/table top) so the base plate is facing up. Apply the thermal compound to the cpu heat spreader, then turn the motherboard upside down and lower it onto the cooler, holding it steady while tightening the mounting screws. It helps avoid getting the cooler mounted with a slight tilt due to its size.

Another thing to consider is the ambient temps in the room your pc is in, are they in the low 20's like 20-23c or higher like 30c? This is a test done with the 4770k which runs just a bit hotter due to hyperthreading than the 4670k does, stock on aida 64 was reaching 61c so you should be around this temp or lower. Keep in mind they tested at a room temp of 23c (73f) which has an impact.

Did you make sure both fans are connected together and connected to the cpu_fan header (not cpu_opt) on your motherboard? Which motherboard is it and are the fans set to a conservative setting for noise reduction in the bios? (similar to 'cool n quiet', different motherboards have different options for this). If you used an actual blob of thermal paste the size of a pea it may have been a little too much. Your temps aren't through the roof, if there was a bit extra thermal paste or if ambient temps are a bit higher than those in the review testing, mounting variables etc it's within margin of error.

Also which aida test was it? The reviews show higher temps when using the aida 64 fpu test vs the standard test.

thank you, as long as my temps are safe im fine with them. since yesterday i actually got my chip at 4.00 ghz fine and while gaming they are completely safe and while running aida 64 they are way within limits, and im completely fine if they are a little hot as long as they are not dangerous. and also i mounted it outside the case and my ambient is around 30c my room is really hot, the fans were connected to one cable and yes i did connect them to cpu_fan 1

that gives me some reasurance, but are you sure thats true because people on forums are like "you cant let it run at 80c it will shorten lifespan" etc

It should run hottest during tests like prime95 or aida, should run a bit cooler while actually using real programs like gaming. How hot is it getting during games? It may shorten the lifespan some if running at 80c all the time, for regular use (not testing) I'd prefer to run around 70c or under at the top end.

To give an idea, it's 28c in my pc room right now. My dark rock pro 3 is keeping my 4690k at 37c, 35c, 36c and 35c at idle. It's oc'd to 4.6ghz with a vcore set just under 1.29v. Just played far cry 3 for about 10min running various scenarios, firefights, driving etc and topped out at 67c, 65c, 65c and 61c across the 4 cores under a typical gaming load.

ok while playing bf4 it got to a very similar temp to yours, but my vcore was set too 1.200 volts, is that a perfectly safe temp
while idle 45c
it was the hottest day of july ever here in england tho, got up too 36c

I bet lol. Though if the temperatures are much higher than normal, air conditioning likely isn't needed most of the time so it makes sense not to have it. In the midwest u.s. and with the start of summer we've already seen temps close to 38c outside a couple of days. Usually ranges between 32-38c for much of the summer.
