Approximate Purchase Date: Within next few weeks

Budget Range: up to $1100 - I have amazon Prime so would prefer to shop there to save on LOTS of shipping cost

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, school (VM and duelboot Linux distros), general

Are you buying a monitor: No

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Amazon and Newgg - Amazon gets me free shipping

Location: Lynnwood, WA

Parts Preferences: no preference, as long as the hardware is tried and true.

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: Now

Your Monitor Resolution: I haven't decided on a monitor just yet, I might just take one from a family member for now

Additional Comments: Something cool and not too loud

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Upgrading for gaming (witcher 3, metal gear solid, hopefully the new Tomb Raider 2 comes to PC and CSGO!!!) and School, need the PC to be able to duel boot and mess w/ VMware, my notebook just isnt doing it.

This is my initial build, and was hoping others could check and see if there were any differences I can make to save money, or improve efficiency and compatibility.

Here is my recommendation. Built a Micro ATX system for you with the best specs I could fit in the budget from newegg and amazon. I took into account you wont be overclocking so i selected the i5-4690 instead of the i5-4690k version. It doesnt make sense why people are recommending the unlocked k version since you clearly said you dont want to overclock. I also chose a graphics card which is already overclocked high from the factory. The rest of the parts I selected for you are all very good quality. I highly recommend this system. It has everything you could possibly want. The evga nex power supply you chose in your build is lower quality than the evga gs i selected and the system you are running wont need 750w. Your initial build is definitely budgeted too high on the case and motherboard.

Sorry, I should have added the case is non-negotiable, it has to be a mini, I am limited w/ room. But I like the suggestions so far. Also what is the difference between the 4690K and non-K

I agree with N3rdR4ge except I would never ever buy the 4690 as it's a terrible value. The 4590 is $25 cheaper.

i did select a mini case. is that one not small enough? its dimentions are 7.91" x 14.88" x 17.52" vs yours at 13.78" x 10.91" x 11.42". the one you have is just more square.

N3rdR4age, the case you selected is a microATX. It's a great case though, but definitely not a mini.

Overclocking is not worth it. Overclocking requires the more expensive K model cpu, the more expensive Z97 motherboard, and an aftermarket cooler. That adds up to around $100 assuming a $30ish cooler. NOT worth it.

the k version is unlocked allowing much higher overclocks vs the non-k

Admirable

there is a difference in performance but you will not notice it while gaming at all. the 4690k is also overpriced on amazon
