how do you use windows easy transfer software between windows 7 professional and 8.1 pro using a cross over cable?

I am trying to use windows easy file transfer to move from my old Sony running Windows 7 Professional Service pack 1 to a new laptop running 8.1 pro. I have misplaced my windows transfer cable and have a cross over cable.How do i get the new computer to recognize the old in the setup steps.? It keeps defaulting to tell me to transfer to usb or external hard drive? It doesn't seem to want to see the Win 7 computer....

That functionality was removed from the transfer wizard after Windows 7, in addition to the ability to transfer program settings and user profiles. The transfer wizard only copies files, and only into the current profile. Microsoft's preferred method of transfer is now via their cloud services.
