Hello today i finally finished buying all my components for my new build. I set out to build a cheap pc gaming and workstation with used and new parts. I will be focusing mainly on games, but i do need to have multiple virtual machines running form time to time and some the security software i will be using drain cpu and memory.

I will be modding the case and will post picture of the whole process. Here is my part list:

Xeon 1230v2
UsedAsrock H77M
PNY 16gb 1866 ram
Zotac GTX 970
Used Semi modular EVGA b2 750w
Kingston HyperX Fury 120gb ssd
WD Blue 1TB
1tb sata 2 ssd i have form my old pc
Rosewill Line-M micro atx case $34.99 ( i plan to do multiple mods so stay tuned)
ARCTIC Alpine 11 Rev. 2 CPU Cooler $12.58

I know i could have gone with a 4 generation cpu. but at the time i did not find one ate a good price. Some will say a k cpu would be better but i would have to get better cpu cooling and a compatible mobo. this build is about saving money. I plan to use this for 2 year max, i want to upgrade to amd zen if its any good. I dont know if i should keep the 16gb or sell it and buy some 8gb for a lot less money. I did end up going quite over my initial budget. Kinda lost track of the money i was spending. Initially i want to stay in the 500-550 range. So what do you think about it did i do good on my parts or could i have done better. Anything you would change. and i already have windows licensing my university provides free copies.

Hmm... I guess that's good based on the fact you already bought parts. Unfortunately, the things you want to do with your system are at very opposite ends of the spectrum. I will say the RAM price is definitely good!

what do you mean?

looks good its great you picked XEON because of extra thread fors virtual machine, Motherboard you could of done better its an old one you can get H97 chipset for as low as 60$, ram is fine 8gb would be enough for gaming but 16gb is great because you will use virtual machines, PSU is good quality, you could of got a better SSD for a bit more, HDDs are fine. other things are fine

I mean, if you didn't already buy the stuff, we could make some changes. But since it is already done, don't worry about it. Your build will be fine.

I know a h97 would have been great but they are not compatible with the cpu i picked. I might change the ssd, supposedly amazon is having a black friday like sale on july 12 commemorating their 20th anniversary. So i might pick up a evo if they are cheaper than the hyper X

what would you suggest, if better options come along i could take them. I can probably sell the cpu, ram and mobo and make a profit. i would like to hear your suggestions

My bad i thought its a XEON e3 1230 v3 which is on 1150 socket, motherboard is fine then great build, for SSD look at BX100 is the best budget SSD
