Hey there, i've encountered an odd problem and as of yet haven't been able to solve it, my pc's been running fine since i built it 6 months ago, however today my disk usage is stuck at 100%, rendering my pc essentially unusable, with 10+ minute wait times to open a program.

I've tried disabling windows search, all the usual culprits but to no avail. Does anybody have any insights as to why this may be happening?

My HD is an WDC WD10EALX-009BA0
Cheers

Try downloading procmon and have it running when the issue occurs. It will give you a very detailed report of which processes etc. caused how much load. It has proven itself as a very valueable tool for me at work.

The thing is, the issue is constant. The second i boot my pc up it's unresponsive, with nothing running at all it's still 100% usage.

Hey there, SamWise_GameGee.

Sorry to hear about the issue you're having. Have you tried disabling BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) as well?
I'd recommend that you backup any important data which you might have on the drive and donwload DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostics), to test the HDD and see what's the situation with it. Here's how to do it: How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows. You could also try the drive with a different computer or at least a different SATA cable/port on yours, to see if the same thing happens.
Do you remember doing anything in particular before this happened e.g. installing new software or update or anything at all?

Please let me know how everything goes.

Does the issue persist in safe mode? If no, please enter safe mode and untick all autostart programs / disable all non-windows services. If the system then boots normally you can start adding programs back until the issue reoccurs. It's a simple, albeit a little time consuming process of eliminitation.

How ever this plays out you are going to need to get another HDD, they cost very little today. Get the new one (if UK I use Overclockers.co.uk) delivered next day, put it in as Primary and disconnect the other one, then install windows. Report back, if lucky you might be able to get all you important data off the old one after that.
