I'm looking at a R9 390 or 390x or a gtx 970. The 390x is available for 5,000NT(200 us dollars) less than the 290x over here so it's very tempting. The GTX 970 and R9 390 are the pretty much the same price.
My current system is:
AMD FX 6300 4.4ghz
MSI R9 280x 1100mhz
ASUS M5A97 R2.0
16gb ddr3
2tb 7200rpm internal hdd
seasonic S12II Bronze 520w psu
No disc drive
Will my psu be sufficient for any of these cards? I've seen a lot recommending a gtx 970 but that would mean I would lose mantle and I am a bf4 player. Really not sure which card to get. Any suggestions?

Well. Your mobo supports Crosfire. I would probably go with a Crossfire setup with another 280x which will give you better performance. But the PSU may need an upgrade there. So I would say R9 390x would be a better option. GTX 970 is also a good option. But R9 390x has significantly wider memory bus of 512 bit compared to 256 bit of GTX 970. More shader units. More texture mapping units and more render output processors.

Go for R9 390x.

I'm staying away from crossfire, seems like nothing but issues. I'd prefer to just have one good solid card. Would the 390x stress my psu too much?

I'm already overclocking my cpu to 4.4ghz (as high as I could possibly get it). 280x is also slightly overclocked to 1100mhz. The 280x has 250w TDP so maybe it's ok?

OKay. It should be okay then. But I would say not to take the chance. Seasonic unit you have is a very good one. But a little bit more power will not hurt as well.

Having said that, you can use your current PSU for the time being. But at the first sign of any problem, upgrade it. :)

Hmm would I be safer with a 390?

Then you don't have to worry much. It will be okay. PSUs with good capacitors would have longer life span and will be efficient for a long time. Only after the capacitors start getting deteriorated will there be any sign of issues. Then you will need to upgrade. This will again depend on how often the PSU is working at its max capacity. The longer it does per day, near its peak capacity, the more affected its lifespan will be. That is why I suggest a Higher wattage PSU. To make sure it lasts a long time.

I'm gaming in 1920x1080 resolution, ultra settings and not using aa any higher than 2x msaa/fxaa. Considering I already get over 60fps with my current card, I think the 290/390 would be sufficient for what I do. I'd rather not replace my psu since it's still rather new. Is it really that risky to run a 390x on my psu? By the way, my cpu is running at 1.44v at 4.4ghz.
