so thats the final build I'm going with, but id like some people to double check it for me and maybe suggest a few small tweaks. this is going to be my college computer so it needs to be able to handle some video editing, coding, animations, and other computer science related tasks.
not going with an SSD because i simply don't need it, money i would have used for that is going to go towards the larger HDD. and i know the 390X is just a rebranded card but it trades blows with the 980 at a much lower cost so thats why I'm going with that. any suggestions would be appreciated. ill be doing some minor over clocking just when i need a performance boost, will probably leave the GPU on a near constant OC if its reasonably quite.

Do you really plan to OC your CPU? Because if you don't, it's a waste of money that would be better spent on an i7 (See below).

Should we assume that is your approximate budget?

Based on your stated uses, this would probably perform better.

i could probably go with out OCing, i just want to make sure I've got enough power under the hood or can get more if i do need it. i can probably do with out though, i have no clue if the mushkin is good or not but its really cheap for that speed and amount so i figured id give it a shot. no real reason i went with the 4x4, but from what I've read there is no difference in performance between that and an 8x2. a bunch of people keep suggesting that Xeon card but i don't really get why.

It's an i7-4770 with no integrated graphics at just a little more than your i5. Spend a tad more and sacrifice something you were going to use anyway to get an i7 and hyperthreading, which will greatly assist your CPU intensive workload and with multitasking. I can imagine trying to work with multiple VMs as I do without the extra ummph.

Plus I was able to add a SSD for your OS/boot drive and still keep it under the previous build.

Your RAM is fine, it just limits potential upgrades, not that you'll need to necessarily.

Or for the original budget, rather than get something 'like' an i7, just get an actual i7. You get 600mhz faster base clock speed, hyperthreading and the igpu plus the ability to overclock if you wish.

okay, so i changed it up to that one, and that will probably be the one i go with. i scratched the SSD again, I'm going to get one after I've got more money, id rather lessen the price a little and just get it later when i can.

could i lower the price at all by switching to a MATX case and MOBO? although id have to change the ram because I've never seen any MATX boards with 4 ram slots. oh, and will the board for the build be able to utilize the 2133 clock speed of the memory?
