Solution

A 500w can indeed handle a 970 but it would be wiser to go for the 960 if you are at 1080p resolution. The 970 is indeed a bang for its buck but i personally feel its not worth it mainly due to 2 things.
1. Its July. Pascal is coming out next year and without doubt nvidia will be incorporating the hbm technology into its hardware.

2. 3.5Gb Ongoing Issue

Additional reasons
Gtx 960 = 15,900 - Cheapest Asus Strix
Gtx 970 = 27,344 - Cheapest Asus Strix.
Others would be
1080p = 960 good enough save the rest for a upgrade. I mean its just my personal opinion but with hbm providing some awesome...

Thanks for your consideration but gtx 970 is way more expensive here in India (550$) and R9 280x requires 750w of power supply and i only have 500w.any other good options with in the price would be really appreciated thank you in advance.:)

500w Psu you definitely cant go for the r9 series so 960 is your only option left. Depending on the service center's availability you can go for either of these

Like what the others are saying, Just go with the Nvida GTX 960 2GB or 4GB. It is power efficient and it requires a minimum of 400W . In games it can be mostly compared to a Radeon R9 280X and will sometimes surpass it. I myself have a Zotac GTX 960 2GB GGDR5 AMP! Edition which is factory overclocked at 1266 Mhz from the reference 1127 Mhz and it rocks in all games at 1080p. though I'm playing it on a 900p monitor and FPS will be around 62-80 FPS in Far Cry 4 Ultra settings and in the 1080p I think it will be around 50-75 FPS. Price of GTX 960 2G is $209 and GTX 960 4GB is $229

If you had gotten the 970 in its initial release or a couple of months after its release it would have been worth it. But considering how well the furyX is doing right now except the coil whine issues which i believe they solved i would personally buy something temp for a year or two and get hbm after a year or two. Not to mention with red and green being quite competitive. Its might be worth it. i mean the price. Then again if you are playing on a monitor 2k or above i would say 970. If not wait for the hbm.
