Hi, my friend's dad has an HP Pavilion Slimline s5704y that is running slow. He would like my help in upgrading it to run better for as cheap as possible. It has 3GB of ram with free DIMM slots to put more in, but all he does is basic web browsing with a few tabs open. Consequently, only 2 or so GB is being used at a time. Upgrading RAM wouldn't do anything. The PC has an AMD Phenom II X2 250 Dual-Core processor at 3.0 Ghz. I looked at new processors, but this PC's cooling is restricted to a mere 95w TDP. An SSD is an option, as my friend's dad occupies only 81.3 GB out of the 500 GB hard drive currently in the PC. The HDD speeds aren't too shabby though, with 110 MB/s read and 100 MB/s writes. My question is: What do you recommend I upgrade in this PC to make it run better? Thanks in advance. -Dean

Its usually not worth upgrading HP or Dell pre-builts. They quite often use custom rather than standard components to help prevent you doing so.

So you really can't change the CPU, motherboard, graphics card or power supply.

But yeah - you can put a SSD in it. You just have to install Windows on it and the motherboard drivers. At least it will boot quicker. And if you give up, then the SSD can be used for another build.

Sorry for my late response, for whatever reason I wasn't notified about replies on this thread in my email inbox. Thanks for the advice, I'll most likely put an SSD in his system.
