I have a Samsung M3 Portable External Hard Drive for about 2 years. It worked just fine so far, but now it doesn't.
When I connect it to an USB port the computer gives the sound and I can see my storage in Devices and Printers menu and in the Device Management. But I cannot see it in exploler and disk manager.
Also when I want to start my pc when the device is attached it just doesn't start.
I've already tried it on Ubuntu and Hiren's cd and on another PC, but it doesn't work either. I've read a lot about this problem and solutions but none of the has worked.
What should I do to at least recover my files? Thanks for your help in advance.

If your system can't boot up properly when the HDD is attached, then you just need to attach the drive after the system has successfully booted.
In case the issue persists even after using another cable, there are two possibilities:
1st one: there is something wrong with the enclosure. Some users take the drive out of the enclosure and attach it internally via SATA or with a SATA to USB adapter. Just take into consideration the things I've mentioned in my previous post.
2nd one: the drive itself has failed. In that case, you will not be able to retrieve the data without some professional help.

In both cases, the drive could appear as 0.

Hi there Goba,

How does the device appear under BIOS?
The fact that the HDD appears under Device Manager but not Disk Management, could mean that your system recognizes the enclosure but not the HDD itself.
You can perform some basic troubleshooting steps like using a different USB cable as well as trying the drive on another system.

In case the issue persists though, and the HDD is not recognized by Disk Management, you will most probably not be able to access it with software tools. If the data is really important, it may be a good idea to contact a data recovery company.
Some users take the drive out of the enclosure in similar cases. Though, keep in mind that this will void the warranty. Also, in case the drive has proprietary connector or hardware encryption, this will not work.

Cheers,

Unfortunately I can't tell you how it's appear under BIOS, because as I said, my PC doesn't start when it's attached. It starts booting, but stops after 2 second and doesn't go on. What could it mean?
I don't have another USB cable, but as soon as I can get I'll try it. Any more idea?

When I plug it in it's starting to make some noise, like it wants to start but can't. And after 5 seconds it stops and then silence... If another cable won't work, what do you think I should do? Any chance to fix it to recover the data?

I checked it with HDD regenerator and it said that Master Boot Record is damaged and says that my HDD has 0 MB and 0 sectors. I guess that means that my HDD died physically.
If that so is it possible to recover my data?
