Hi, Im goign to start off by telling you that I live in Tanzania, East Africa but I do have access to a pouch address which ships such as you would inside the US. What I am looking for is a very strong and very cheap server solution for media and other servers, mainly LAN. I have looked all over for cheap and usually used servers online but have not ad any luck. I would like to be able to put at least 4TB worth of drives in it and unfortunetly as I do not have a rack cannot be a rackmount server. I was hoping that someone could help me find an affordable server that can be shipped or if someone has one that they are selling that would also be great. Thanks for your assistance.

Hey, I didn't notice the reply before today.

Anything with a 4 or 8 core should work. Anything in the FX CPU line. For memory 8-32 GB is the standard unless you are running web servers or something that doesn't require much ram. I recommend a Raid 1 (mirrored) or a raid 5 configuration. You can use large drives if you need space. If you are virtualizing servers, I recommend trying to put every OS volume on a larger SSD and any data volumes on larger mirrored spindle drives.

On the lower priced end I would look at something like this for a build:
www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9515547&CatId=11842
or
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9150979&CatId=11842...
If you can have things shipped to you identically as one of us in the U.S. can, eBay is your answer. There are bunches of old servers and server parts on eBay. The one caveat is that you have to know the particular model/parts you want and that is how you search for them. I have bought several servers/parts enough to make a server from there.

Ian, why do you want server hardware? I ask this because you unless you need a specific component, a slightly higher up-time guarantee, or something else, I would just use a desktop. For example I run two super low end (cost under $200.00 each) Fujitsu Primergy servers at home. I upgraded the ram, CPU, and HDD's and I now use them as Hyper-V hosts for two DC's, a few app servers, a file server and some other stuff. I have 6 TB of combined storage on both servers in a Raid 1 configuration. The whole setup cost under $1200.00 USD. This is just an example, but you can stretch your dollars a lot farther if you avoid server components and go with desktop components.

Wow, I have looked into desktops as well but I can never get it right, I have tried buying refurbished motherboards and CPUs online and it always turns out wrong. I was actually just looking at cheap AMDs, could any of you guys suggest a good, cheap desktop for use as a server?? I have no idea what it entails. Thanks

The top one has an 8 core CPU and the bottom one has a 4 core CPU. You would need to get 4TB drives and maybe more memory.
