SSD Corrupted or something else? Please help!

Hello everyone.

So this morning I tried to boot up my computer and it went into a BSOD restart loop. Basically it kept trying to carry out repairs but couldn't, therefore kept restarting. It also tried to repair disk errors, but to no success.

The SSD at fault (OCZ Vertex 4) is sometimes recognised in the BIOS, however other times it is not. Same thing in 'My Computer' (using 2nd SSD as boot now). However if I try to access the drive, Windows Explorer crashes. This leads me to believe it's a corrupted SSD. Also in disk management it is showing up as RAW instead of NTFS. Can anyone confirm it is a faulty SSD?

Many thanks :)

Solution
i would check the SMART status on the drive and perhaps run the OCZ utility on it to check if its a now useless drive or salvageable.
I've pulled an OCZ drive back from the dead before with a few firmware flashes, however all data on it was lost (most of their firmware updates are destructive).
There have been a lot of firmware releases to fix SSD issues over the years. Is your SSD running the most up-to-date firmware? You would think by now the release firmware would be stable, but it's still worth looking into.

Have you tried replacing your SATA cable? Older style had problematic cable ends that could fatigue and become intermittent.

The latest firmware is from 2013. But I am not sure of the firmware currently, so I'll check up on this. Yes I've used different SATA cables, however still the same result. I did notice that re-plugging the SATA cables caused it to be recognised after a restart. Thanks for the reply!

I have already wiped and will now try the driver fix. Thank you!

Have downloaded the OCZ utility and will use it to see if I can do anything. It's good to see that you were able to revive one yourself! Thank you!

I've tried this aswell. Different sockets and different controllers. Also I installed a new motherboard a couple of days ago. Could this be an issue?

Different motherboard causing your problems? Maybe. Theoretically it should be okay, as the signaling between the drive and board should be standardized, but you never know how close some manufacturers are skirting things. Even a name as big as Sony is guilty of that sort of thing. Redoing the drive with a new partition and format should tell you, but I really wouldn't trust the thing at this point. Maybe relegate it to a secondary drive that holds games or rapid access data that's backed up elsewhere?

I did try to format the drive however that wasn't successful If I do manage to get it to work then yes I'll definitely be using it as a secondary drive. Many thanks!

Will remove any partitions and see if that helps. Also in task manager it shows the Disk as being at 100% usage all of the time. Does this indicate anything? Thanks.

100% usage? Yes. It sounds like the disk is tying up the bus it's connected to. Could be due to errors, or simply high actual usage. Reposition the drive in the system. Make sure both it and it's signal cable are as far away from any high power carrying wires and noise generating circuitry as possible. Could be having some interference issues. Perhaps you're PSU is not providing a solid ground through your SATA power connection and your drive is not well grounded to your chassis?

It's being incredibly odd. One minute it shows up as RAW, another time it shows up at NTFS. Before the usage was 100% now down to 0% after an unsuccessful format. I will do as you advised and report back. Will probably have to be tomorrow. Thanks again for all the help, appreciate it!

That may be the case. I can't do anything with the drive. It's not recognised by the OCZ utility, I can't format it, initialise it or do anything. Anyway I will get on with all the suggestions above and report back. Thanks again :)
