I have a Nvida GTX 460 and tried to install an update today. The installation hung up at 99% for about 1-2 min minutes. Around this time I returned to my computer right as I saw a notification come up on the screen from windows. All I was able to read was something about "low power" and as I read on the computer shut it's self off.

I waited a minute or two and tried to turn the PC back on. It would turn on, load the BIOS screen and instantly shut off. I tried this 3 times spamming F8 trying to get in and run it in safe mode. It would never let me get past the Bios before instantly shutting down.

At this point I unplugged my PC and removed the graphics card from the MB. I wasn't sure if the connection was lose or what the issue was. After removing the card and making sure all of the connections were strong, I tried to power the PC back on without success.

The PC will not even power on at ALL now. It will not load the bios or even attempt to power on in any way. Does anyone have any idea about next steps?

I have an OCZ ZX series 850W power supply. Is it possible this is related to the power supply? I am not sure because it just seems odd that this all started while installing the driver.

Any help or next steps would be greatly appreciated. If you need additional specs on my PC please let me know and i will post them ASAP.

That does seem odd!
If i pretend i don't know the background story, it CERTAINLY sounds like a PSU issue.

Easiest way to test? Get some spare PSU from some other PC or your junk box.
Take the side off your case and just connect the externale PSU to your PC.

Does it boot then?

I dug up an older 650 PSU from the basement junk box about 15 minutes ago. I simply plugged the mainline right into the MB and nothing else and tried to power the PC on. It did not work...however maybe i need to plug in more things for it to boot?

Yeah, probably a 4 or 8 pin CPU will be needed. You'll also need to get SATA power to the Hard Drive.

The GPU probably has a power pin on it too but i'm not sure.

You'll need to plug everything into the spare PSU as the old PSU isn't ever going to get the cue from the mobo to power peripherals.

Here in lies the problem with the old PSU. The old 650W PSU is ancient and has one line of cables coming out of it. There is not an option to swap the type of cables it uses. It is pre-determined and there is no option for me to plug in the SATA for the HD. I am assuming this PSU is too ancient to efficiently test it, which leaves me with 2 options.

Go to my local store and purchase a new PSU and try it. If it boots and powers up then fine, good to go. If not, then return it and move on to another option.

Anything else you can think of before i go this route?

Fair enough.
As long as the 20/24 pin main, the supplemental 4/8 pin CPU plug, and any power on the graphics card are plugged in - you should boot.

You'll get an error saying "no boot media detected" or something along those lines but your PC should POST with just that stuff plugged in.

EDIT: And that should be enough to tell you that it is in fact a bad PSU

I was able to plug the old 650w PSU in using the main MB cable and the CPU cable. The issue is that this PSU only has one PCI-E cable coming out of it and my graphics card requires 2. I tried to plug in just the one and it would not boot the PC.

Ouch!
So close! i know for sure there exist adapters to go from Molex to 6pin power. Maybe that big box in your basement has one of them in it? They are often thrown in with GPUs...

Your local store may have the adapter, maybe not... And if you're at the store anyway... Your call.

That said, with the GPU NOT powered, the PC should turn on so far as the fans spin and mobo leds turn on.

EDIT: IF the fans DO turn on then that is a huge sign that your old PSU is bad.
If the fans DON'T turn on then i'd suggest checking the seating of your power button wires! two tiny little wires which when closed turn on the PC.

I just put a new power supply and my PC turned on and worked perfectly right away. I just wanted to say thanks for the troubleshoot and quick responses.
