Dell Optiplex 755 gaming build power consumption help...

Hello! I've made a gaming rig out of a optiplex 755. It is a Mini-Tower optiplex 755 with a 305W Power supply. It currently has these specs:


8GB of DDR2-800MHz Ram (All of them = 8W Combined)
1TB Samsung 7200RPM HDD
Nvidia Geforce GT 610 2GB of GDDR3 Ram (29W Max)
NO DVD/CD DRIVE!!!
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz (65W)

I want to know if i can replace the intel core 2 duo with: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Quad-Core Processor, 2.66 GHz, 8M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB

Can i upgrade without upgrading to a new PC or PSU? (Dell has a custom PSU so i cant just get one.)

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Processor (2.66GHz, 8MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB, VT) was a processor option that was available to the customer so you should have no problem upgrading the CPU. It should already be supported by the motherboard's BIOS.

You also don't need to upgrade the PSU when you upgrade the processor. It already has sufficient power to handle that CPU model.

With the BIOS updated to Version A21 some have been running with a Q9650. There are also the Q9700 and Q9705.

By the way, when i was asking about how much power i may need, i meant i have currently a 29W Graphics card, will i be able to add another 30W?

Power supply wattage isn't what matters. It's the power supply's maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating that determines which graphics card you will be able to upgrade to. Your 305W power supply should have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 20 Amps.

In your case you should be able to upgrade to, at most, a GeForce GTX 750 Ti without having to upgrade the power supply unit. It would have to be a version of GeForce GTX 750 Ti that doesn't require a PCI Express supplementary power connector though.
