So I've been running out of space on my secondary PC (an HP Compaq dc7900) with only 160gb of space inside and I have a 500gb drive (hitachi hts547550A9E384) already inside which I took out of my old laptop that I can use but it has a bunch of files I need to backup somewhere and I didn't have any space left for backup on my google drive so I decided to plug it into my primary PC that I built a while ago (an AMD FX-6300 system running Windows 8.1) and dump all the important files into it so I can wipe it and put it back into my secondary PC. I put the drive into my primary computer and booted it up. It turned on as normal, but as soon as it got past the bios splash screen it just got stuck at a black screen with a flashing white underscore. If I go to the bios it shows the drive as recognized and functional but the computer won't boot up normally. As soon as I take the drive out the computer boots up fine. I've tried different SATA ports on the motherboard as well and using a different SATA cord but it makes no difference. The drive works fine on the other computer, does anyone know why this happens or how I can fix it?

Solution
Make sure the hdd you want to boot from is the bootdisk in the BIOS. Since you added the 2nd hdd it maybe trying to boot from it, and obviously it cant. Its not bootable. And doesnt have windows on it

Sometimes when you add another hdd the BIOS will change it to the bootdisk. Whether it's bootable or not

Thanks! Turns out the drive was set as the first to boot, quickly fixed it :)
