[SOLVED] I did all the above (erase and format as MacOS etc" for toshiba canvio and time machine still won't access it

Bought a new Toshiba Canvio 1T and installed the Tuxera so it could be used on an iMac but then time machine had me erase and format for MacOS ... and now won't recognize it.

First uninstall tuxera as that is for NTFS drives. Then use Disk Utility to partition and format your external drive as an HFS+ drive. It should then be recognized by Time Machine. It is good practice to use the drive only for TM backups and not for other purposes.
