I have an AMD FX-4150 125w cpu.
I have been happy with it other than the fact that it throttles down to 1.4ghz on more demanding games for seconds at a time before going back up to 4.

My specs:
Psu: hec Orion 585w
Cpu:fx-4150 @4.0ghz
Mobo:Biostar A960d+ mATX
Gpu:Nvidia GTX 650 Ti 1gb
Ram:8gb

I originally thought it might be my temps after noticing that they would stay around 60c> while occasionally hitting 70c. But after purchasing a Hyper 212 Evo, my temps rarely go above 30c and I'm still getting throttling. As said in the title, I've tried many things that others have said worked for them. I've disabled power features and enabled/disabled turbo core control with overdrive as well. Could it be my board..?

could you recommend a good psu for cheap..?

Well the Biostar site claims support all the way up to the 8xxx fx series at 125w.. false/misleading advertising, i suppose? What would you recommend then? I wasn't planning on a motherboard switch until I make the jump to Intel..

And for both of you, why does it work most of the time but only throttle on certain games?? It also seems like it only does it on games I can borderline run great. Gta, for example, will run fine for a while. Rarely drops below 45fps with it moslty runnig at almost 60fps, then it will all of a sudden dump for like 5-10 seconds before jumping back up to normal. Most other games, even relatively demanding ones, will run more consistently. The lowest I'll see it drop to is 3.998ghz, which is obviously acceptable.

Admirable
Well GTA V is very CPU demanding game.Your mobo is rly low quality product that is not good combo with FX CPU's.
Getting 212 EVO was good and bad decision in same time. You will have much lower temps on CPU but now your VRM suffers from huge temps since they lost air cooling from stock cooler. You can try to UnderVolt your CPU to reduce heat and power consumption.

A lot of the 760/780 series chipsets "officially" support 125w FX cpus, but NONE of the "really" support them in the real world. You are probably experiencing throttling more often than you realize, it's just not affecting you drastically all the time. These cheapo chipsets don' have the proper vrm heatsinks to handle the power of the FX cpus. The CM 212 probably a makes things worse on the motherboard actually as the stock cooler blows air down to help cool the vrms. You could try an after market bigger better cooler that's like the stock cooler. You should also try to downclock and undervolt the FX4150 a little. I would rather have it running at 3.0ghz than 1.4ghz for example. The FX4150 has four low power states(shown below) and 1.4ghz is the lowest one. That's really bad.

#1: 3600 MHz, 1.25V
#2: 2800 MHz, 1.1375V
#3: 2000 MHz, 1.0125V
#4: 1400 MHz, 0.9375V

Getting a better more efficient psu will help a little, but it's not going to solve the problem.

I would NOT buy a new motherboard for that FX4150 either.

Is there no way I could go about trying to keep those cool as well..?
The stock cooler was crap and I haven't noticed anything warmer than before. Quite the opposite actually as the entire system seems cooler, but I could've easily missed something.

I would be content with a consistent 3.6ghz.
How would I go about achieving this?

You can go into BIOS and set everything manually. Set the multi to 18, set the voltage to manual and then set it to 1.25v. I would also disable turbo. Test it. If that doesn't work, bump the multi down to 17 and drop the voltage a bit (0.05?) and try again. Rinse and repeat until it's stable.

Since you are seeing the LOWEST power state, I doubt 3.6ghz is possible full time. You're more likely going to have to drop to the next state which is 2.8ghz at 1.1375V

Such a drastic decrease will also drop my performance quite a bit, won't it?

Well thanks for the help anyways, I suppose.

The 95w FX6300 would be a huge upgrade while also running better on your motherboard if you want to go that route. The 95w FX8320e would be decent as well. You can probably find a used one for cheap if you don't want to drop another $90-100 on a new "old" FX. Keep in mind that even a stock FX4300 would be an upgrade. The Piledriver chips are quite a bit better than the Bulldozer ones.

So.. I feel like a dummy.. I decided that I would order a new board, with the intent to upgrade the processor later. But long story short, i accidentally scratched the current board, started it to see if it'd still work, smelt something that didnt smell good (burning,) and immediatley turned it off. Afterwards, i tried turning it back on and didnt smell anything, but i couldnt get anything to display and it won't beep at me. I got my new board and switched everything out, but its still doing the same. The light on the new board comes on and all the fans spin up, but still no display.. Ive tried with a known good psu as well, but still nothing.. Think i couldve fried my cpu? :/
