the switch is for when you want to stop the psu consuming even slightest amount of electricity or emptying the capacitors before you work on the parts inside.

It's a switch that's easily accessible, why not just flip it? It shouldn't damage it but why not just flip it?

you can leave the switch on the back of the power supply on all the time.
not sure what you mean by the main socket
if your going to start unplugging stuff inside your PC you need to unplug the power supply from the wall.
