Hi guys,

I was thinking of upgrading from athlon 2 x4 640 to fx-6100. will this improve my gaming?!

current setup:
Athlon 2 x4 640
8gb 1600mhz ddr3
radeon r7 260x

thank you in advance!

Solution
with fx6300, yes, likely. it's a better cpu and better for money. you might not be able to o.c. high on that board btw.
however, in gaming, the gfx card is priority and in most cases the r7 260x will be the limiting factor. so, you might not see as much improvement in some scenarios -it'll depend on games. overall application performance is likely to improve.

i don't think of changing the motherboard because an fx cpu will fit on it. and psu is 500w i dont know the brand sorry! budget is 100-130euros

thanks for the answer btw

that's not why i asked about the motherboard. i asked because we need to know the full specs. and to understand whether you want to drop the new cpu in your current motherboard. if the cpu isn't compatible, you might need to buy a new motherboard.

check inside you pc (unless it voids warranty), the psu model name and number should be printed on a label.

is this your motherboard:

i am asking this because this one has an FX suffix.
you can check the cpu support list here:
http://www.msi.com/support/mb/760GM-P21-FX.html#support-cpu

the psu will need an upgrade. it has 16a on the +12v rail totalling maximum 192w. it won't deliver that much since it's an old psu.
the r7 260x itself can pull up to 100w in load scenarios. board power is 88w.

fx 6100, fx 6300 are 95w cpus.
