So i hope this is fairly simple to solve, I have put in a btx 980 to replace my r9 290, however when i use afterburner it tells me it is using "microsoft basic display adapter" which i presume is not my gtc 980.
How do i set it as my primary use?

Solution
Did you uninstall the AMD drivers for the R9 290 before you took out the video card and put in the new one?

"microsoft basic display adapter" usually means that Windows is using did not find the right drivers.

Did you install the Nvidia drivers?
make sure all the power plugs on the gpu are filled. check if the card has power good led that it lit and the right color. (asus gpu). make sure the gpu is in the video slot and it locked in. make sure the gpu cable is on the gpu and not on the onboard video port. on some newer mb there been bios bugs with nvidia gpu and intel ipgpu. see if your mb has the newest bios file. in the bios make sure primany display set to peg not auto and try turning on muilt monitor to see if both ipgpu and the gpu come on.

Is this video cable connected to the GPU and not the motherboard?
