I'm in the middle of building my new gaming computer, and to test it, suggested by a friend, I would plug in my power led and power switch to turn it on. My cpu intel pentium, corsair 430w power supply, 8gb of ram are currently installed into my gigabyte b85m-d3h motherboard just so I could test it. So I turn it on and the cpu and power supply fan turn on for a few seconds and then turn off, nothing else. I tried completing the circuit of the power on wire with a screw driver, same result but at one point it lasted a few seconds longer. How can I fix? Thanks :)!

Solution
Recheck all connections and ensure the cpu cooler is firmly mounted(you can ensure the pins made it past the board from the back). If the heatsink pins did not grab the board you will have to try that part again.

Ensure both the 24 pin and 4 pin power are connected to the board as they are both needed.

Try with single stick of memory. You manual for the board will list the optimal slot to use for this.

When you are testing make sure the board is NOT on anything metal, it should be on a non conductive surface.

Also check this list to ensure nothing was missed.

You seem to have a good understanding of how to build pcs. Familiar with the components, steps, process, etc. I'm not saying this applies to you, but some people like to be able to do everything themselves without too much outside help. If you truly want your issue resolved, you should utilize all available resources; web search, diagnostic software, online books/materials/instructions/, working with a team, etc.

Lastly, have you tried working backwards through process of elimination until you have isolated the potential source of the problem. Things like this can prevent you from being dependent on others to work out a problem.

They are key to making sure your motherboard is properly seated in your case and wont short out. That board has I think 5 or 6 holes for standoffs. Each hole should have a spot in your case for a standoff and screw to secure the board.
