I reinstalled XP on a friend's old Dell computer to clean it up I have rebuilt 2 of our Dell Laptops over and over again (using the disks that came with them), so I pretty much knew I would have to reinstall all the drivers She did not have the original CDs. I pretty much goofed on this one because I copied all the drivers I needed from Dell onto a cd/dvd, but the drive won't read the files. My assumption is that on the factory driver disk they have an installer. Can't connect to the web either - the ethernet driver is on the disk too. Any help out there? Thanks!

OptiPlex GX520 is the model #. And you are absolutely right about the stick. I have a lot going on right and a million things are going through my mind. That was obviously not one of them. I think it will work perfectly. I do have one and will try it tomorrow. Thanks

So you can't see the disc when its in the drive at all? Or it appears blank? Or the files won't open?

Get the network/ethernet/communications driver installed first and you should be able to navigate to the dell website and download the rest of the drivers off there. I did the same thing on a 2005 XPS and also lost the CD. I made my own driver disc and when installing the drivers on fresh OS installations I would copy them from the CD to the desktop then remove the CD. And run the driver's individually from the desktop. The Ethernet driver was the biggest help though.

Re: Skippy - what you suggested is what I had planned to do - the internet driver first and then download the rest from their site. The cd/dvd drive appears empty so I can't copy any of the files. I am going to try the stick as suggested by the first responder and see if that works. Thanks for your reply - lately nothing is easy. lol
