how good is the AMD fx 4100 quad core cpu

Hi i have a AMD FX 4100 quad core CPU in my gaming pc but i really have no idea how good it is, ive had my pc for nearly four years so you could say i have some upgrading to do. would you say i need to upgrade my cpu? if so what cpu would you suggest upgrading to, preferably cheap and good performance.

it's about as poor a performing quad core cpu you can put your hands on today. even worse then the older phII x4 965be.

if you gave us your budget we can give you some suggestions. it would help if you posted your rig as well.

Depending on what motherboard you have you can go FX6300 or FX8xxx series as the cheapest upgrades.

i have a corsair 550 rm psu and a msi 760GM-P23 (FX) motherboard, is there anything else you need to know?

yep. i concur with rolli59. best move would be to get the fx6300 and do a little light overclocking on it.

hmm okay thankyou, but just in general how good is the fx 6300? and will it be able to run off of my 550w psu if i am getting a gtx 970 mini graphics card?

Yes, the FX6300 will run just fine with the 550w and gtx970.

Make sure you you the right BIOS update for your motherboard to run a 6300 first.

I recommend upgrading your cpu AND motherboard if possible. I wouldn't buy another cpu for that terrible motherboard.

That motherboard has got a 3+1 power phase, and you suggest overclocking a 6300 on it?

That board should not be overclocked on.

most fx cpus will hit 4.0-4.5ghz on stock voltage. i'm not suggesting he touch the vcore on that chip. but he probably will be able to put a bit of on overclock on it.

I disagree. There will be no overclocking on that board. It would barely handle the FX6300 at stock speeds and would likely throttle ANY FX at heavy loads including his FX4100

Okay thanks, my plan is to get a bigger case and upgrade my motherboard to a bigger better one, is there any that you suggest? please keep in mind a low budget as well as i am running a 550w corsair rm psu and i wish to use a gtx 970 full perferably but i dont know if i can run that on my psu yet, if i can not i will use the mini.
