A few months ago I purchased a WD blue 1tb HDD to uprage from my very old 500gb HDD. Pretty much the moment I installed the new HDD I've had problems but over the past few months they've morphed into an untamable beast and I don't know how to fix it. I've always just assumed and placed blame of the HDD but as I read more forums and web pages I'm learning that game freezes / black screen with fans revving up can be a whole host of issues. I'm fairly certain as of now it is my GPU which I've tried running Furmark tests on but they have either frozen my PC or put it into the black screen sped up fans state. It may also be my mobo , it is quite old and not the greatest to start with. Another culprit might possibly be my PSU. I've tried under clocking my GPU , playing games at a whole host of different settings and about 100 other things that I can't quite remeber. Sometimes my entire PC just freezes other times it does the whole black screen thing. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

CPU i7 3770
GPU evga 770 4gbs
Rose will 880 watt PSU
Asock h77 pro MVP 4 mobo
Corsair vengeance 8gbs RAM
Cpu temps while gaming never go above 60-65 c
Gpu while gaming never goes above 70c

Now I'm wondering whether I should try to start RMAing some in my component s or just buy new ones. I'm really at a loss here . Thank you so much a head of time. If you have any questions please ask!!!

it may be that when you installed your new drive it pushed a bad or weak power supply over the edge. when gpu lose power there firmware on the card takes over and will max the fan speed out to keep the card from cooking. use a program like spacy from people that make ccleaner...log your power supply voltages see if there holding withing atx spec. also pull the gpu and run some cpu tests on the rig and see if they still lock up. or ask someone for a spare power supply and or muilt meter and check the voltages at the 24 pin atx connector.

Ok I downloaded it and watched those voltages for about 15 minutes. The 3.3 and 5 stayed pretty much constant the entire time, however the 12v completely stopped after about the first minute...

* I would have let it run longer but got a BSOD displaying the message SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION.
ALSO I forgot to mention im using Windows 8.1 Professional 64 bit

I spent some time thinking about my issue one afternoon and decided I might as well do an entire system cleaning. So I spent 3+ hours removing all the dust and hiding wires, that sorta thing. When to my surprise I found another 6 pin that I had not known about previously so I decided to switch it out for the one I currently had plugged into my GPU. All I can say is that my PC has been working 100% fine these past couple days and I am very happy!
Thanks smorizio for your help.
