What does DD-WRT do for my router?

My pc has a vpn and it shares internet to my xbox so players cant ddos me. Ive recently heard or DD-WRT and leared that my router can have a vpn on it and no longer have to connect my pc and my computer. Is this true and what else and DD-WRT do?

most medium-high end routers support vpn settings in the router meaning you setup vpn on the router not the computer and all traffic connected to the router goes trough the vpn.
