8 cores (AMD) vs 4 cores (Intel) (Java, VMs)

Looking at this (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4690-vs-AMD-FX-8350), you can see that Intels 4 cores are better.

But how do AMDs 8 cores stand to Intels 4 cores in terms of compiling time and running virtual machines (Android emulator on PC)?

Can they take advantage of all 8 cores? The emulator most likely can't and I doubt the compiler would. For your requirements the i5-4690 will be faster and cooler.

Android emulator is an application, not a VM (though you can run it in a VM).

Everything I find leads me to believe it's single threaded; therefore a CPU with the highest IPC is best, but it will be slow (and even worse if you run it in a VM).

Any single threaded benchmark. You provided a link to http://cpuboss.com that shows the i5-4690 is faster.
