ok assuming you bought a legitimate windows but have lost your key

use this to find the key

write it down where you wont lose it again

put disk in start to install windows then enter the key you wrote down

Do you have a Dell PC?

Did you read all the small print on that?

"OEM Software: Microsoft's Distribution Agreement for System Builders states that the system builder software packs are not intended for distribution to end users unless the end users are acting as system builders by assembling their own PC's. A 'system builder' is anyone who assembles, reassembles, or installs software on a new or used computer system. For OEM software, your software will be bundled with an AS IS non-working hard drive.

OEM/Reinstall Disks/MAR Software: To be in compliance with Microsoft licensing, recovery media, OEM media and MAR media containing Microsoft Software must be redistributed as part of a complete package that contains the media, the original computer hardware with which the software was distributed and the corresponding COA label. Therefore we sell these items bundled with the original broken systems motherboard. YOu are purchasing this software which is bundled with hardware."

OK, conflicting terms here.
As above, a "Factory Reset" is generally what is included with a prebuilt system, to bring it back to out of the box condition.
An OS install is just that...just the OS from a install that you bought.

If you have your original install media with the license key, then that is (hopefully) all you need. Just reinstall it.

lol--you have the patience of a saint--wall and banging head come to mind

its not a factory reset--your pc didnt come from a factory with the os already installed

its a re install--so yes you need the key that came with the disk

Download and install Belarc Advisor.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

This will probably find your license key

If it does, print it out, then go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery
Enter your key, and see if it will allow you to download the relevant ISO file
If it does, then create an install DVD

Install with that.

If the Microsoft link does NOT allow you to download the ISO, then you will need to buy one from a valid reseller.
Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect...
NOTE: some dude on ebay is not a valid reseller
