Hi all,

I'm trying to give my brother a birthday gift. He wants a gaming PC for playing games like:

  • ■ Skyrim
    ■ Fallout
    ■ Other FPS, but probably not MMO-- more on the single-player offline types.

He has a few kids (all under 10), so probably some kid-friendly games too.

I've built a couple of PCs in the past couple of years (including a gaming pc for me 2 years ago), but I am more of like an amature enthusiast than an afficianado (so I'm not up-to-date with the latest info on hardware).

Could anyone make suggestions to improve this build? Here are some key considerations:

  • ■ He only really needs it for gaming (all other computer stuff, such as e-mail, word processing, or the occasional movie, won't be very taxing).
    ■ Aesthetics aren't very important but it would be nice if it looked a little cool.
    ■ I'd love for him to be able to use "Ultra" type graphics settings on Fallout/Skyrim type games.
    ■ I'd like to get the price down as far as possible ($1K without monitor would be awesome).
    ■ The build doesn't need a monitor.
    ■ Portability (maybe a case with handles?) is a plus but not a big deal. Would be nice to bring it to my place (a few miles away) for a lan party once in a while.

Thanks; I really appreciate it!

Solution
Build is out of balance. Ill fix it. Give me about 5 min. Any reason for the Micro ATX would you consider changing? No need for 32GB RAM, Thermal paste, or a sound card. Also that is an expensive fan?
Changed the PSU. Dropped the SSD. Changed the cooler. If you find another case mid atx or full atx. You can use it. The Enthoo Pro is good but expensive.

Leaves a bit of cash for something else

Admirable
Alright so he needs it for gaming. There's no need for 32GB of ram. Cut that down to 8Gb (2x4GB since rarely ever, any games use above 8gb of ram

Now, the hard drive Seagate barracuda is not good quality. Replace it with a WD Black 1TB for gaming performance

Feel free to add on to this list

Drop the paste. The cooler will come with some.

Get an h97 motherboard.

Get 8gb RAM for gaming. 16gb if he will do anything like rendering/encoding. 32gb is completely pointless.

Ditch the sound card. The onboard audio is better.

PSU is not good quality. Change for Antec, XFX, Seasonic, EVGA (G2,B2,GS).

SSD is not good. Change for Crucial BX100 or Samsung 850 series.

GPU is not a good choice. Change for 970 to stay under budget.
