I finally got a new computer that I desperately needed but I decided to keep my old hard drive so that I will be able to clone it and wouldn't have to go through the trouble of setting windows 8 back up and reinstalling my apps/games. Here is where the problem starts. I was able to clone my setup my new hard drive and clone it just fine, but after cloning it, it wasn't using the other half of the drive and I don't want to have two 500gb partitions. I went to extend the volume but by doing this, it said it would turn the basic disk into a dynamic disk. At the time, I didn't really know the difference so I went ahead and extended the volume... or at least tried to. After confirming that it would be converted into a dynamic disk, it didn't extend the drive at all. It was still at 447 gb but was now a dynamic disk. It was at this point I looked up what a dynamic disk was and realized I wouldn't be able to use it to boot up my PC. So, I went through and looked up how to convert back to a basic disk and what not and converted it back but I still face the problem of it be split into 2 different partitions...

I am sorry if I made this thread too long but I thought it would be best to include everything.

Thanks in advance.

Solution
The cloning software should have an option to resize the partition on the new drive. You need to change this setting before you start the cloning process. Change the setting and re-clone the drive.

Macrium Reflect.

Also, I no longer have my windows install disk and that is the main reason I decided to clone my hard drive

Provided a screenshot so you can see the problem..

Would you happen to know where the option is in the program I am using?
Also, thanks for the reply.

1. I don't know which cloning software you used. You didn't list it.
2. The cloning software manual should list these options.
3. Have you serached the forums. There are plenty of threads on cloning.

Also, you didn't list the new drive manufacturer. Most drive manufacturers now have some type of free cloning software, so you may want to try their software instead of whatever you used.

1. I did actually post the program I used and it is in the screenshot I provided. It is Macrium Reflect.
2. I have found where to resize the drive but I ran into a problem and it won't let me adjust it any higher.
3. I have searched the forums but didn't find anything. I will continue to search while I wait for replies.

The drives manufacturer is Western Digital and my new drive is Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive. I wasn't aware that manufacturers provided there own cloning software since this is my first time getting a new PC and setting it all up so sorry if I ask any silly questions.

It is the free version and I wasn't aware that it wouldn't let me adjust it. I am already downloading and launching the setup for Acronis True Image. While setting up Acronis, it had a popup that said the product was limited. Will I be able to adjust the size in this one?

Thanks for the help.

I do recall other users using WD's Acronis and successfully changing the final partition size. You may need to dig in the menus to find the option. Also, there are a few WD reps that monitor our storage section. They should be able to help if problems arise.

There are no silly questions, only silly answers. ;)

Glad it worked out for you.
