How much does the 3.5GB VRam on GTX 970 affect gameplay?

It doesn't .... in order to see an effect,m you have to create a contrived set of conditions to cause an issue and only in certain games.

The 390 is competitive with the 970 at stock settings, but the 970 can see as much as 40% fps increases overclocked..... whereas the 390 sees increases of up to 8%. The 380 isn't in the running.
