I am looking for a high-end CPU for a new pc-server hybrid build. I need to be able to run Windows XP Professional x64 on the new computer. I will be running a backup server on the computer, and it will control my tape library. The high-end software requires Windows Server with the exception of XP.

I am loooking at Intel i7-5820K and i7-4790k CPUs, but I cannot find a motherboard for them that has drivers for xp on the manufacturer's support page. Is there a way to work around this? What is the fastest Intel CPU/motherboard I can use? A motherboard with drivers for XP and higher, and Server 2003 and higher is ideal.

I already know I can use an FX-8350 with full XP driver support, but I am wondering what Intel's offerings are. I wanted something a little faster. I already know the pros/cons with staying with xp.

Thanks

with windows xp you can install the newer intel chipset drivers. I know the z77 chipset mb support windows xp. you should email asus and msi pre sales support and tech. they can help you more to see if any of the newer mb and chipset support xp. also email intel support see if they can help you.

It looks like the X79 chipset is the highest with Xp drivers, so processors like a I7-3930K would work. Many of the processors from intel cost at least twice that of an AMD, and it seems like there is only about a 20% gain in speed (at around $400), plus the motherboards are more expensive too.
I can't decide yet if it is worth paying $300-400 more for only that much gain though. With the parts I want to get, it would cost around 1,200 with an 8350, or about 1,600 with something like a 3930K.
It is for home use only, security isn't a concern.
