Well the other day. i sorta messed up my on board sound chip. i was installing a graphics card and it was a tight squeeze. i pushed down on the graphics card a little and the back plate of the graphics card Hit my Sound chip. So i get no sound now. I was wondering if i buy "External USB 2.0 to 3D Virtual Audio Sound Card Adapter Converter 7.1 CH " would i be getting sound? here is a link to the extrenal usb 2.0 http://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/ShoppingCart.aspx?submit=ChangeItem .

So do these extrenal usb sound cards have a built in sound chip? and would it work if my motherboard's Sound chip is not working.

check in the bios that the chipset still on. also see if your video card in the right video slot. should be the closet to the cpu. if the sound chip is damaged your better off getting a asus sonar or creative labs pci-e card if your mb has the slots for them.

eather card will work to get you sound back.

The link doesn't display item in question but yes, generally usb soundcards either have their own chip or they use CPU to do the sound stuff.
Later choice of course uses bit of processing power.

if you meant http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA30R1SX5167 then yes, it would work and it would use bit of CPU power to do the sounds.

just remember to disable onboard sound chip in BIOS to stop it from haunting you.
