Hey all,

I have a bunch fans in my case, most notably the Corsair AF120 Performance fans. My external fan controller I was using could see the RPMs of the fans just fine.

Now that I have switched to a better motherboard, I wanted to connect 4 of these fans to the Fan1-4 connectors on the board.

My issue is that the software doesn't see the RPMs of these fans at all.

So, two questions:
Is the motherboard just not able to see fan speeds then?
Will it adjust the output voltage to the fan connectors regardless?

And here we go - the Corsair fans do not provide enough voltage for some (a lot) of motherboards as covered here:

http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=119379

The SP120 fans signal had an amplitude of only 3.5V and the lowest value was 1.5V, while the other fans signal had an amplitude of about 5V and the lowest value was just over 0V.

Apparently the Corsair SP120 fan tacho output has a too high series resistance to work correctly in this system. I do not know who is to blame here as Intels specs are unclear about tacho currents, resitances and detection voltages but is does seem strange that both mainboards have this problem with this fan while working with many different other fans, so I would guess the problem is in the Corsair fan.
