I recently purchased a GTX 980 and at full load and running normally its at 1200mV. However, every once in a while it won't go higher than 875mV on game's it should be at 1200mV for. I have a 500 watt PSU and i can't find ANY information about GPU voltages and why this might be happening.

Solution

PSU is probably your problem. Get an xfx, it's seasonic parts but a little bit cheaper but a great power supply or get a seasonic. I have an xfx 650 watt, it's quiet and runs good. EVGA has a few good ones but you need to get the right ones as there are a few cheaper models that probably aren't as good. Corsair has good...

My 980 ti dips down to 875 and sometimes around 1000 mv when it doesn't need it but then it goes back up. The voltage kind of moves around, as well as the clock speed on mine, depending on when it needs it while you are playing. Every once in awhile mine gets stuckat 595 mhz and the voltage at minimum but that was mostly when I was tuning my overclock. It hasn't really done it since then but my voltage and clock speeds do move around, depending on the game.

I know it will drop down to 1000mV or whatever when it not running at full load. But on game it should be like The Witcher 3 where it would normally be at full load and 1200mV it will only be at 875mV and i would get sub 30fps on low settings at 1080p when I normally run at 60fps ultra @1080p.

Nevermind, it shows now. Hmmm, not sure about that. If it runs full voltage I would think it's not really a power issue. Mine would do that while I had an unstable clock and I had to restart afterburner but since I have a stable overclock now, it doesn't do that. I'm not sure, it just randomly does it?

Always random and out of the blue. Consistent until all of a sudden it just decides to go back to normal.

Does it stay at that voltage until you do something like quit the game or it goes back to normal after a few minutes without doing anything and is it in a certain area that if you go back to that area it does it again?

It stays at that Voltage until I exit the game.

I'm sure you've already tried but I would uninstall drivers and reinstall again and whatever program you're using for your on screen display, I would also uninstall it and reinstall it. I don't think it's your psu but it could be, what is your psu brand and model and how old is it?

I have a Thermaltake TR2-500. I've tried uninstalling drivers before and it hasn't worked sadly. I just did it again.

Corsair has good power supplies but only the expensive ones, as in their line which is $120 and up or so. Their cheap ones are not good.

There's a list I have somewhere of the different tiers of power supplies, I'll link you in a few. Tier 1, 2 and maybe 3 is good but that psu is a tier 5, it's probably causing the issues.

thermaltake Tr2 500 or 600 < Very very poor power supplies.

Tier 5 - Other than the units listed above for any of these brands, NOT RECOMMENDED. Replace ASAP if you have one.

Alright, I'll go pick up a new psu hopefully soon.
Thanks for all the help man! Really appreciated considering how expensive this GPU is!
