Hello there,

I was on my computer during a storm and after some lightning struck near my house, my monitor flicked off and on again and I lost my wired connection to the internet. The computer icon in the bottom right of my screen usually showing my connection to the network had changed to a red cross, which usually means the network isn't connected.

I thought this was strange, so I decided to restart my router. After doing so, the computer icon had changed from a red cross into a yellow exclamation mark. However, the wired LAN connection still didn't work and told me my wired connection was on an "unidentified network".

I read into this only and read that I should try to turn my computer's power off completely and leave it for a few hours. I decided to do this and unplugged my computer from the mains for a few hours. I returned to my computer a few hours later and turned it back on, only to discover that the computer icon now had turned back to a red cross, and my computer was not even detecting that the wired cable was in the LAN port. In the Device Manager, under Network adapaters, the wired LAN driver is not appearing. The light on the LAN port is orange when the wire is not plugged into it, and turns a bit green when the wire is in.

I used my xbox 360 to test if it was the wire that was broken, and the wire connected my router to my xbox just fine. I downloaded an update on my xbox to confirm the internet worked through the wired connection and it does. Afterwards, I unplugged the wire from my xbox back into my computer, but it still was unable to detect a connection and still displayed the red cross on the computer icon in the taskbar.

I have been searching for a solution for days but I cannot find anything, so please somebody help me! I have updated my Windows to the most recent update today, but still not working.. I will be checking this thread all day and bumping for multiple times because my wireless internet is so slow!

Solution
There's a few more things you could try:
Open device manager, click on the menu at the top of the window and select "scan for hardware changes"

If that doesn't work, find your PC model number and do a search on the official website for the network card drivers and install them. I could help you with this if needed; list your PC model type

Luckily for you, Ethernet cards/ports are inexpensive. First, I need to know the model of your PC so I could help you find a network card that fits inside one of the slots in your pc
(It could be pci, or pci e slots)

Or open up your PC and take out the network card, identify the model number, and locate it on Amazon or newegg for purchase

Hey there

You could try to get another IP address. Open cmd

Type in
Ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /renew
Ipconfig /flushdns

If it gives you a media disconnected error, it could be the Ethernet port in your computer got fried by the storm
Let me know how it goes

Hi Reyaz, thank you for your fast response.

I used cmd to try the commands you suggested and these are the results that I was shown:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Users\Cherrill>Ipconfig /release

Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The sy
stem cannot find the file specified.

The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for
this operation.

C:\Users\Cherrill>Ipconfig /renew

Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The sy
stem cannot find the file specified.

The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for
this operation.

C:\Users\Cherrill>Ipconfig /flushdns

Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

I used the Windows Diagnostic tool and it said that I did not have the proper drivers installed for the LAN connection. The LAN connection worked for me for over 3 years, so could this really be the problem?

Since it started happening after a thunderstorm, those errors are telling you that the network adapter (or Ethernet port inside your PC) has either been disabled, dead, or needs updated drivers

1. Open device manager, locate your network card/s, right click them and try to update (might not work due to not being connected to the internet

2.Open control panel--network and clearing center------change adapter settings---find your network adapter/s----right click them all, and enable them

3.Are you using a static IP address? Open your Ethernet adapter properties from step 2 above, click on ipv4 properties, select automatically get IP address and DNS

4.After you do this, restart your PC

5.When you plug in your Ethernet cable to your computer, do you see a orange, green, or any light at all around the Ethernet port? (You mentioned it was green sometimes?)

My LAN connection does not appear in device manager or the adapter settings I do not think? I took a screenshot and uploaded it to imgur, which may help you help me. http://i.imgur.com/6y6CuJo.png

Without the Ethernet cable plugged in, the port is lighted up in an orange colour. When I plug the Ethernet cable into the port, the port stays orange but there is some green around the top of the Ethernet cable connector.

I see, now that narrows it down. Thanks for the screenshot

Try a system restore and you may get the wired adapter connection back in the Ethernet connections folder
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/products/features/system-restore

How is your internet setup? I notice you've successfully connected to the Xbox. Do you have another computer around? If yes connect to the Ethernet of that instead and see if it works.

Edit:Is your default gateway correct? Try typing the default gateway into your web browser to check if you can access the interface
Otherwise your network adapter card has been damaged and needs to be replaced

How? That's the first time system restore has done this to anyone I know of

Which error message are you getting? Does it allow you to access system repair? Keep pressing f8 at computer power on then select use last good known configuration

If you could boot to safe mode, you will be fine. That means it couldve installed the drivers for the network card when the network card isnt working preventing startup

Let me know if you need help with this

I am back! The system repair worked but I had to use a system restore to after my network card stopped working for my computer to work again. I think that as you said, it is highly likely my network card got fried during the storm :( Thank you for your help by the way, what should I do in the case that my ethernet port is fried?
