I am looking to get another home security dvr since 2 have failed me now, after 1 yr each.
I have been using my ----Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 / 1.5 TB 7200RPM , SATA , 3Gb/s ,32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST31500341AS,
S/N: 9VS09Y4V, ST31500341AS,, P/N: 9JU138-302

I have performed the seatools hdd SMART test and full test, and the hdd PASSED all test by connecting it to my desktop.

I have 2 questions?

1) could it still be my hdd, instead of the recorders?

2) if a manufacturer's dvr states SATA II in the specs, will mine above work?
(How do i know if mine is a I OR II, OR III? I CAN NOT FIND IT ANYWHERE!
DOES IT EVEN MATTER?)

Thanks!

Hello,

Your HDD is SATA II, it should work with any SATA II/III controller.

Your DVR/cameras are directly connected to mains or through a surge protector/UPS? If the equipment don't have any protection at all, it's no wonder the DVRs are failing. Also, if the distance between DVR and cameras is higher than 10 m (30 ft), the system must have a good grounding and the coaxial cables should be at min. 0,5 m / 1,5 ft from the electrical wiring of your house.

Of course, depending of the model also, it may be a DVR overheating problem (if you live in a country with high ambient temperature, you must assure the DVR has plenty of airflow around it; there are also DVRs with built-in fans, which assures that the heat is evacuated from inside the case, thus maintaining the proper temperature for the chipset and HDD).

The DVRs are not functioning at all or just the HDD is not working with them?
