I have an EVGA GTX980 ti on the way through EVGA Step-up and im wanting to get a second one for a SLI setup but the only ones I see in stock are the OC versions... Is it possible to mix an OC and Non-OC card? Both EVGA, both GTX 980 ti?

Solution

You can mix different brands and speeds. The main thing is for SLI they just need to same model gpu and vram.

1st, if it isn't for 4k its overkill, I would wait, try your single and then decide if the games you play require another one. Does it have to be EVGA? Zotac has the AMP! (non extreme). It's the cheapest non-refernce Cooler 980 Ti, it has stock clock speeds, I have to warn you, I have it and its massive almost didn't fit in my DeepCool Tessaract case, I had to put it in diagonally then straighten. You can mix and match as long as they are all 980 Ti, mixing clock speeds has changed, it used to go to the lower cards speed but now its supposed to manage the load based on each clock speeds. From what I've heard this works sometimes but sometimes hinders performance, but I'm sure it will get better!

For the 1st card and Step up thing it does have to be EVGA since I'm trading in my EVGA 970s through a program they have for it. I'd really like to stick with EVGA since I've had such good results with the 760 and 2x 970s I have from them. But that being said, I also haven't given other brands a try to see if they are better either...And I'm not too worried about size, I have the Corsair Carbide Air 540 and I've yet to see a card that didn't fit with adequate room left, even the behemoth Gigabyte Windforce GTX760 I had still had room.

And it kind of will be for 4K gaming right now, with actual 4K later. Meaning...I currently have a 1440p monitor and I run DSR to push 4k detail. While it's not as demanding as a native 4k it's a good bit more demanding than 1440p

Another question is when I monitor and adjust the cards through PrecisionX, the different clock speeds won't keep it from linking them or anything right? With the 970s I can just slide one slider to adjust both fans, slide one slider to OC them both the same. Would I need to keep them unlinked it terms of settings, not disabling SLI, when I plan to OC since one will already be boosted higher than the other?
