What features do you need ? All the "bells and whistles" ? or just the basics ?
At the $100 - $110 mark, the Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H And MSI Z97M-G43 have been well received..... if you looking for "bigger sound", the ALC 892 may give you pause.
At $125, the Gigabyte GA-Z97MX brings you ALC 1150, something the comparably cost Asus Z97M Plus forgoes.
At $140 and up, my choice would be the MSI Z97M. Feature wise, it matches up well the Asus Gene which costs $70 more. Both offer 2 PCI-E 3.0 slots and an M.2 slot as well as 3300 memory support, The MSI has two less SATA ports with 6 to the Asus' 8 but adds in 2 extra PCI-E x1 slots in exchange The MSI adds Display Port connector and 2 extra USB 3.0 ports.
