I am currently building a desktop, and am wondering how important it is getting a motherboard with SLI to future-proof my system. (I am getting a GTX 970)

Solution
To people that would rater sell their card and upgrade to the newer cards when theirs no longer performs the way they wish and avoid running SLI it's no big deal.
If you think you will buy say a used card in the years to come then yes you need it along with buying a big enough PSU now to ruun them so you don't have to buy a new power supply also.
I say used because when the next generation of cards go into production they will stop making these and when the stock gets low the prices go way up because people still buy them for SLI.
Only you can answer that question.

If you think you may want to SLI in the future then it is absolutely worth paying $20 more for an SLI motherboard today.
If you are fairly certain you will never use SLI then it is not worth it.

With all of that said, it is generally advised to get 1 strong card over 2 weaker ones in SLI for stability and maximum compatibility.
