I have a computer at work and need two monitors. I bought a VGA splitter but it is just a mirror. I tried extending but it's

Before jumping into splitters it would help to know what cables are available for the monitor. Some monitors have multiple input capabilities and can be attached with an hdmi cable, vga cable, hdmi cable. For instance if there's an hdmi video out port on the back of the pc and an hdmi port on the monitor, an hdmi cable can be used to connect one of the monitors that way without need for an adapter. It varies from monitor to monitor as to what ports it does or doesn't have. If you have one that has only a dvi cable for instance, and your only other connector on the motherboard for the additional video connection is vga then yes, you would need the appropriate adapter.

+1 to gbb0330's question, some companies have an it (computer) dept...
I think using the splitter is the problem. In essence you're just splitting 1 video signal, where for multi display (extended) you'll want two different signals, one for each monitor. Does your motherboard have a vga and an hdmi output? Or some configuration of multiple display outputs? If so try connecting one monitor to each, then right click on the desktop and choose graphics properties, display, multiple displays then extended desktop.

Yes, all the splitter will do is send the exact same image to the other monitor. You will have no control over what is displayed on the second monitor, it will simply be a mirror of the first monitor. You have to have a Graphic card or VGA device with multiple monitor hookups to do what you are wanting to do.

I hate to admit my ignorance but I have no idea what is on the motherboard (it's my work computer). I do see an HDMI port, so would I get another cord HDMI to VGA? The main monitor does have a VGA input and another larger port to be used as screen 2. In this case would I get a VGA to DVI splitter?

does your work have an IT department, or outside contractor that takes care of the IT support?

+1 to gbb0330's question, some companies have an it (computer) dept or 3rd party contractor that handles those things. If it's a small company and you have nothing like that then hopefully the above helps you out. You don't want a splitter, a splitter will send the same signal to both monitors and you'll have 2 screens showing the same thing. You need 2 separate video outputs on the motherboard (aka 1 hdmi, 1 vga) and each one will have a cable to monitors 1 and 2. Then you can use extended display to span the screen across both monitors.
