I have a windows 7 ultimate 64 bit HP xw8200. It was running 8 gigs of ram fine. I upgraded it with 4x4 gig sticks of ram to equal 16 gig ram which is the max for this model. I can boot into windows fine and the machine tells me it can see the 16 gigs but only 8 gigs are usable. All the sticks are new and good I have swapped them around. I have reset bios to default reset cmos as well. I was going to try and flash bios but from what I read other places that does not help. Im not sure theres a newer bios for win 7 ultimate anyway I am currently on version 2.0.8. Any help would be appreciated I would love to get this workstation fully working. I've been googling this fix but I cant seem to find a sure answer. I wanted to see if there was anyone knowledgeable with computers that could point me in the correct direction. Maybe someone who has successfully fixed this as opposed to just guessing. thanks

Thanks, that was a fast reply I appreciate that. I thought that might be it since it has 8 dimm spots anyway. Someone told me the 4 gig sticks would work and the quick specs were old but I guess they did not know they would not be usable. I'll go the 2 gig route like Saberus suggested, Im sure he is right.

Paul there was nothing like that in my bios. It's an old bigboy still hanging on. thanks for the suggestion.

I would like to know if you succeeded in using 8x2GB of RAM memory, because I tried that option and my workstation refused to start giving a 5 beep error message. It would only start with 4x2GB installed. I hope you have a solution to use 8x2GB.

You need to make sure that the memory modules are ALL single rank as the xw8200's chipset supports a maximum of 8 ranks.

Dual Rank modules are only supported in the first two banks A and B. Banks C and D do not support Dual Rank modules and will be disabled if used.

In general, single-rank memory modules are built using x4 (“By 4”) DRAM chips and are more expensive than dual-rank memory modules (which are built using x8 DRAM chips); both module types have the same number of chips but the x4 DRAMs are more expensive than x8 DRAMs. Dual-rank memory modules may limit future upgradeability and capacity of servers when using PC2700 or PC2-3200 memory.

It sounds like you need to make sure you purchase single rank modules.
