Question above.

Which card will run best at 1080p?

Will the 980s 4gb of vram hold up for another 2-3 years? (how long i need this gpu to last)

I may also overclock in the future, which does this better?

Solution
yeah, in the future 8gb will come in handy as texture resolution increases. The gtx 980 will probably perform better for the most part in the future.

If the gtx 980 is a lot more than a 390x then i would go with the 390x, if it is about the same price then go with the 980. If you don't want to spend that much go with the 390.

They are actually pretty close in performance with the 390x pulling ahead of the 980 in some games.

the 390x is cheaper and has twice as much vram and a huge memory bus which is nice for high res textures and future games.

the gtx 980 consumes way less power and is less hot, it probably overclocks way better too.

Ive also heard that will release some drivers that will improve performance even further.

so i did some math and if you ran both cards on max load for 1 year in an area that costs about 15cents per kilowatt hour, the r9 390x would cost $100 - $175 more in power (depending on which benchmark you take numbers from) than the gtx 980. Obviously this is an unrealistic scenario but it is good to know. Check how much electricity is in your region.

The two cards would probably end up costing about the same if you take power for a few years into account, you would have to do quite a bit of gaming though. Like 4 hours a day for 3 years with 15 cent per kilowatt hour with the highest benchmark numbers.

they use about the same power idle depending on which benchmark you look at.

I would personally go with the 390x as games are increasing in texture resolution and the 390 is better in 4k, and amd will release new drivers.

P.S. my current card is a gtx 970 so i am not an amd fanboy.

Hmm, but from looking at other benchmarks the 390x and 390 seem to have very similar performance at 1080p. Would I be better off getting a 390 then since the price is around £70 cheaper than the X version of the card?

I'm not really an expert when it comes to PC hardware (I'm more of a plug in and play kind of guy)
Would you say that the 390 is more future proof than the 980? Or will I ever even use over 4gb of vram when playing exclusively @1080p?

*sorry to bombard you with questions you just seem to know a lot more than I do and I value your advice :)
