I'm just curious if this is really necessary, and what my tangible (fps) bonus would be in doing this. I'm moving away from two GTX 770s in SLI to a GTX 980Ti SC edition. Eventually I'll get a second 980 (4K 60 frames ultra on every game), but who wants to drop $1,400 at once lol. Anyway, I'm wondering if using one of the 770s for Physx while I'm waiting for my 980ti SLI is worth it or should I just sell it?

Your original post contained vastly different statements

1. You didn't say "your games", you said "4K 60 frames ultra on every game".... two Titan X's can't do it, so the 980 Ti...
1. No pair of any GPU can do 60 fps on ultra w/ every game at 4k.

2. Current 4k monitors will be obsolete once the the next Display Port spec compliant hardware is released (144 hz capable)

3. You'll need a 2nd Ti instead of a plain 980 (as written)

4. You can't use a 3rd slot on a Z97 (well 99% of them) w/o losing SLI capability, so it would be a temporary thing....the PhysX card will have to go once the 2nd Ti arrives.

5. If you are dead set on 4k, I'd keep the 770s until 144 hz 4k monitors arrive along with cards in 2016 that can drive 4k at 60+ fps in all AAA titles.

Right now I recommend 1440p, IPS, G-Sync monitors with ULMB for the most fluid and impressive gaming experience.

1) I'm playing all the games I own on Ultra in 4K at 50-60 frames. I would imagine that many of them would hit a consistent 60 with an extra 980ti.

2) as the "next" 4K monitors are not out yet... I am using what is out now.

3) I understand how SLI works and that I'd need another 980ti.

4) yes, I know how many slots are on my MoBo.

5) you'll always be waiting for the next thing. In 2016, I'm sure there will be something coming out in 2017. I'm upgrading from 2 770s at 2Gb vram.

You're recommendation does not answer my question.

that powerful of a video card is flat out overkill for a PhysX card...yes it will help some in terms of fps but you could sell it and run a much cheaper card in its place if you want to carry on using a dedicated PhysX card...I currently have 2 7950s crossfired with a 550ti as a PhysX card and it seems to work pretty well, couldn't imagine using something like a 770.

That's what I'm thinking after reading from a few different forums. Plus, if I can $200ish for each card, it brings me 60% to a second 980Ti. Which, I know may sound overkill, especially when already running GTA5, Witcher 3, Crysis 3, and Call of Duty AW all at essentially an unlocked 60 fps (45-60 without stuttering) in 4K with mostly Ultra settings, but the goal is 60... even if I only get 350 for both, I'd probably take it just to move them quickly.

Im in the same boat...I too have been recently looking into getting something newer for my videocards, not sure exactly which card im getting yet but I do see the prices on some of the 970s and 980 non ti come down so I might go that route...the fury x is also convincing but I think with only 4gb of vram it would be a weak point in the near future. Anyway PhysX is great but only a few games take full advantage of it. Id say sell the 770s now while you can get the money for them and if you still want that dedicated PhysX card get a 550 or something similar...I got mine for less than 50 bucks and its nice to have PhysX with amd cards for batman.

Your original post contained vastly different statements

1. You didn't say "your games", you said "4K 60 frames ultra on every game".... two Titan X's can't do it, so the 980 Ti certainly can't. As for playing with two 770s @ 2160p ultra at 50-60 fps...., the much improved 970s in SLI can't do it on half the games in TPUs test suite. I can only conclude that the games you own do not include the following:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_Titan_X/9.html

AC Unity = 32 fps
BF4 = 44.3 fps
Crysis 3 = 32.5 fps
Dead Rising 17.3 fps
Dragon Age = 46.4 fps
Far Cry 4 = 44.5 fps
Metro LL - 42.1 fps
Ryse = 48.7 fps
Watch Dogs 47.8 fps

2. Cards capable of doing what you originally posted do not exist yet so "what is out now" simply can not satisfy your original request. Trying to understand why > 60 fps card capability is listed as "a must" when the 60 Hz monitor can't display it. If the tougher of today's AAA gams are at least 60, then it's a given that most games will be much higher.... however, you won't be able to display it. It's like getting a CLC to get cooler temps and higher OC's while the fact is a less expensive air cooler would allow it to run significantly cooler and, potentially, at a higher OC. There is simply no advantage to > 60 hz unless you have a monitor that can display it.

3. You said "I'll get a second 980" ...... not a second 980 Ti. SLI does in fact work with a 3rd card in PhysX, just not on your MoBo / CPU combo.

4. How many slots are on the MoBo is irrelevant .... how many lanes your CPU and or MoBo can provide is the limiting factor. Your CPU provides 16 lanes which allows x8 x8. Add a PhysX card or a PCI SSD and you go to x8 x4 x4. X99 provides 28 (5820k) or 40 (5830k). Z97 w/ PEX also supplies adequate lanes

5) yes there will always be the next thing .... but it is important that things be balanced. There would be no sense in buying a USB 4.0 mouse unless there is a MoBo that provides a USB 4 port. Right now, no pair of cards delivers > 60 fps in all games at 4k and if it did, it has no value with a 60Hz monitor.

Your question was:

"Anyway, I'm wondering if using one of the 770s for Physx while I'm waiting for my 980ti SLI is worth it or should I just sell it?"

The answer was that you could but

"it would be a temporary thing....the PhysX card will have to go once the 2nd Ti arrives."
