Adding a second RAM stick

Hi I already have 1 Kingston hyperx black 1600mhz ram stick

I need to add another in dual channel. So should I need the same one?

If so can I use the model number in the package to find an identical one?

If so would those 2 sticks work 100% right in dual channel?

Or should I buy a new 2x4 8gb kit to ensure that they would work fine in dual channel?

Thanks

Yes - read more threads, the forums are full of people trying to 'add' more DRAM and having problems, even with another of the same identical model - DRAM...
So should I need the same one? It would help

If so can I use the model number in the package to find an identical one? It would help

If so would those 2 sticks work 100% right in dual channel? Probably not

Or should I buy a new 2x4 8gb kit to ensure that they would work fine in dual channel? That's the only guaranteed way to do it - get a tested ram kit.

I don't understand whats going on with your project. Is it a desktop? a laptop?

from what I've read you can get another module and it will work but the duel channel functionality may not kick in. If you want to chance getting it to work you want all the specs to be the same: frequency/ CAS latency timings/ and voltage. Otherwise as the poster above said the garanteed way to get duel channel functionality to work is getting a duel channel kit.

Ok thanks. Damn this stuff are espensive. Do you think team ram is good? Or should I go for corsair and Kingston?

read more threads..... I've not heard anything about ram not working; it will work. The question is whether the duel channel mode will kick in or not. So your question should be: do i want to get duel channel mode to work my getting a duel channel kit. Or do i want to just get another stick of ram. If money is tight and you just want to get one stick. then get one stick the exact same as you have--- make sure you look on your existing stick for info that will match your CAS Latency timings. The website had three different CAS timings on it.

Yes - read more threads, the forums are full of people trying to 'add' more DRAM and having problems, even with another of the same identical model - DRAM is offered in a variety of sets to allow people to get the full amount they want and ensure the sticks they get are tested to play together. There is no guarantee in mixing sticks from different packages. If it was as eay as you try and make it sound, the makers would simply sell single sticks and drag in higher profits

Hi I contacted Kingston support EU and they said,

They said,

"If you want to add another memory and run it in dual channel mode, you have to make sure that the Part Number and the Revision number of the memory is identical. Otherwise, I would suggest you to purchase our HyperX Kits of 2 or of 4 in order to ensure that. As your motherboard supports up to 3300 MHz in OC"

What do you guys think about this? I am ready to buy a new kit if I really have to.\

Thanks

No, what I mean is, my mother board has 4 ram slots .1,3 one color 2,4 another color. I believe this means I have 2 dual channels.

There's no benefit of getting a kit of 4 since my motherboard doesn't support quad channel.

So I believe I can have one kit this time in one dual channel slots. And I can have another identical ram later.

Do you guys agree?????

My mobo - MSI Z97 Gaming 5
Or Asus H97 Pro Gamer

You have dual channel...period, each channel has 2 slots you can fill, as far as 2 now and 2 later -- there are no guarantees all of the DRAM runs together so all sticks have to play together, the only way to guarantee doing so is to get them in a single package, those from a package have been tested to all play nice....you can go to the assembly line and pull 2sticks off and they might play, they might not, hence they test sticks to finds ones that do play nice

As realizable the 4 sticks won't run together. Each 2 will run together. So there's no need for all 4 to be identical.
Am I right?

No

One lot of two might run together. So might the other lot. But it doesn't mean all 4 sticks work together. They haven't been tested and found to work together. Whereas the 2 lots of 2 have been - but separately.

That's what I said with MSI z97 gaming 5 and z97 pro gamer,

There are two dual channels labeled in two colours.

There's no way four sticks would work together.

But two lots of kits would work fine right? Two kits in two channels?
