Hi guys,

I am looking to give my old system some oomph (is that a word) and looking at a new GPU.

Current system:

i7-3770k 3.5
Gigabyte GA-Z77P-D3
GTX 980.
650W psu
Win 7

Looking to get a GTX 980TI or similar, though a Titan is a little out my reach. So my question is, would my current board accommodate a GTX 980 card like this?

https://www.alzashop.com/msi-gtx-980t-6g-gaming-d2651122.htm

I've asked gigabyte but they say they can't confirm as they 'don't have a board to test it on'. No reply from NVidia either?

Many many thanks in advance.

sincerely,

Stevie

You are fine to use the gtx980 with the i7 in your MB, because your i7 3770k will support the pcie3.0x16, so the pcie slot will be the pcie3.0x16http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4148#sp , even the pcie2.0x16 will be fine for the gtx 980.

You have an Ivy bridge processor so that means your pciex16 slot is in version 3.0 mode so why wouldnt it work? it would work even in 2.0 mode for what thats worth. The real restriction is will it fit into your case and do you have enough power to run it which we can answer neither of those since we would need more info.

Your current build say you have a gtx980, are you really considering upgrading to a 980Ti from that or was that a typo?

Thanks guys, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my query and for the links. It was indeed a typo, I currently have a 3 year old GTX680. Will be picking up my 980TI end of the month.
