Hi ! im planning for my 1st buil. It will be mainly for x264/x265 encoding. It will be a BUDGET build.

I choose the i7-5820k cpu with the msi x99s SLI Plus motherboard.

My question is : i will do some overclocking (well im a totally noob but i want to do some...) so i think i need a good cpu cooler...wich one do you recommend me. I saw the Cryorig R1 but im in Canada and they dont ship to CA. The noctua D15 looks very good but looks very Huge. i saw the be quiet dark rock 3 but i read on some forum it wont handle overclocking very well. Water cooling of air cooling ? I know i wont go for extreme overclocking. So what cooler do you recommend me ? and if it's a huge D15 what case do i need ? Full tower or smaller one ?

Remember it's a budget build :)

Thanks alot.

The Noctua coolers are very good, but you have to make sure, that it does not block your ram slots (if you need them all).
If it's still the case you can get some low profile ram which fits under the cooler.
Also you would have to look for a case big enough to put the cooler in. I cant suggest any but all informations should be displayed on every case manufacturing site. Maybe someone else can suggest you a nice case. :)

I think you'll need a way stronger GPU for editing and stuff like that but that should be no problem, since you can save ALOT by downgrading your CPU and therefore motherboard and RAM too.
If you change it make sure your PSU does still have enough watt for the GPU.

CAD stand for Canadian, in this instance. ;)

lol--thought they meant Computer-aided drafting

though still seems an unbalanced pc and still think socket 1150 might be more appropriate than x99

well forget about video editing i can use my laptop for this since it's small projects. It will be mainly a x264 encoding machine and x264 dont support GPU acceleration and i dont do gaming so i choose a cheap graphic card

The system is heavily out of balance. Depending on the program used, it might make more sense to go with a Xeon 1231v3, and put more money towards GPU. Also that PSU, in that case, is junk. For instance, Sony Vegas does really well with AMD cards, so this would be a better build.

If program is more Cuda friendly, then you would want a better Nvidia based card.

yeah i follow you now

just testing x264 encoding on my 2600k seems to handle it pretty ok--though its at 5ghz

x264 gives better quality results than using hardware accelerated encoding?

Of course if you use Quick Sync Hardware Acceleration it's equal as "super fast" preset with x264 (wich is the lowest quality preset) you can use medium or high preset with x264, using cpu only and it will encode @ 60-70 fps @ 1080p with the 5820k.

For the moment i use my laptop with a AMD A6-3400M (4x1.4ghz turbo up to 4x2.3ghz) and i encode @ 8 fps with medium preset lol took me 12 hour to encode The hobbit.

in that case i see why you picked that cpu

noctua or phanteks cooler probably

have a read here see if it helps any
